We have several farm projects in front of us and the teams to get the work done. We're excited to have this opportunity to serve the community, build teams, and imagine possibilities for children! Sustainability, Local Food, and World Peace are well on the way!!!!!!
Thank you for picking so many blueberries for kids!!!! We now have over 145 pounds!!!!
Welcome to the first ever 2016-2017 school year at Newbury Elementary School. The teachers and I have been working hard to prepare for the upcoming year and it is really looking like the stars are aligned. This staff and community have so many irons in the fire that we can safely say we are “walking confidently in the direction of our dreams.”
As always, loving kindness and hard work are at the heart of what we’re doing here at Newbury Elementary School. We’ll be aiming our efforts toward our mission of Sustainability and our vision of World Peace throughout the year. Because we take our mission and vision seriously, we would like to invite you to attend our First Annual “Day of International Peace” on September 21st. More information will be coming home in regards to this event as it develops. The exciting thing is that last year 1,000,000 children observed this UN Sanctioned day in Thailand and this year, Chicago Public Schools along with countless other districts are observing this day as well. Hopefully we’re teaching the students to not only think critically, but to think to good purpose!
Building on the old Vermont philosophy of hard work and home economics, we’ve mixed in brain-based research to lead us into “Project-Based Learning”. We’ve always known, and research now shows, that when students are lit on fire to learn, and they have the chance to practice strategically again and again, growth is the result. Designing these experiences is exactly what Project-Based Learning is all about and our teachers are at the cutting edge of the research. In fact, several attended workshops over the summer and are chomping at the bit to share their learning with others before the kids arrive. In an effort to raise the stakes and celebrate the good learning that the students are doing, we’ll be holding Learning Exhibitions three times a year. You’ll be invited to view the student learning as well as performances at each of these Learning Exhibitions. We hope to see you at these exhibits and at many other functions throughout the year.
Finally, if you’re new, or old, to Newbury Elementary School and would like to be part of the book clubs, farm-to-school initiatives, volunteer opportunities, or other activities that spontaneously arise, please stop by or call us at 866-5621. We’re looking forward to seeing you!
